conduct

The Code of Conduct clearly establishes our guiding principles for and expectations of all Westlake MTB Team riders, coaches, ride leaders, volunteers and parents. Abiding by the code embodies who we are and pushes us to strive for excellence in all we do.

Respect
  • We treat all coaches, ride leaders, team volunteers, teammates, trail users, the trails, the environment, parents and ourselves with the utmost respect.
  • Marking your availability in Team Snap (app for communicating with the team) is a form of respect. This applies to student-athletes AND ride leaders.
  • We expect student-athletes to listen when being given instructions.
  • We expect parents to volunteer where needed to support the coaches and the team collectively.
  • We expect communication with coaching staff regarding pertinent issues ie. sick, missing practice, making up rides, leaving race early for approved reason, etc.
  • We expect student-athletes and parents to read emails and TeamSnap notifications and be respond if needed.

Drug Free
We will be drug free by avoiding smoking, vaping, edibles, pills, injectables and any performance enhancing substances as identified in the Utah League rules.

Commitment
 We are committed to:
  • Each other
  • Learning to do hard things
  • Grit and Courage to become more than we think is possible
  • Focus and Finish
  • Just keep pedaling
  • Being on time
  • Racing
  • Lending a hand
  • Trail building days
  • Attending (at least 75% of team practices)
Failure to attend 75% of team practice sessions will result in a one-time race suspension. We expect missed practices to be made up, tracked on Strava (free app), and communication with a coach.
State Champs!
Sterling James and Carter Anderson pose after taking 1st and 2nd place (respectively) at the Varsity 2020 State Championships. They represent the pursuit of excellence and the legacy that is ours to keep alive on the Westlake Rolling Thunder team.

Trail Etiquette
While using the trails and race courses I will:
  • Respect and be courteous to ALL trail users
  • Yield to pedestrians and equestrians
  • Yield to uphill riders
  • Pass with care, announcing my presence audibly and yielding until it’s safe to proceed
  • Respectfully allow faster riders to pass
  • Ride on legal trails only (no shortcuts)

Safe Riding
While on my bike I will:
  • Have my helmet on and fastened
  • Control my speed
  • Brake safely
  • Ride predictably
  • Ride within my ability
  • Stay with the group

Preparation
Before every practice I will:
  • Ensure my bike is in good order (ABCDE protocols)
  • Have water on my bike or on my back
  • Wear appropriate clothing and shoes
  • Have a tool bag attached to my bike or on my back
  • Bring my helmet and fasten it on my head while on any bike
  • Have any necessary food for the effort
Failure to prepare for practice will result in the rider being sent home.

Follow League Rules
All riders, coaches, ride leaders and parents are subject to all Utah League and NICA rules which can be found here.

By not abiding by this Code of Conduct – riders, coaches, ride leaders, volunteers and parents risk being suspended for races or removed from the team and forfeiting all fees paid.

Picture
Having the "right stuff" doesn't always mean what you think it does! Sterling James was missing a bike seat for the last lap of his 2020 Varsity State Championship race - and he STILL finished in 1st Place!
Mountain Bike
Outfitted with:
  • 26 to 29 inch wheels
  • Tires not narrower than 1.75 inches
  • Knobby tires (no slick tires permitted)
  • Multiple gears with at least 5 cogs in the rear
  • Fully operational front and rear brakes
  • Front or full-suspension recommended

A solid, performance cross-country mountain bike is not not cheap. At a minimum, plan on spending $500+ . Typically, student-athlete bikes are in the $1,200 - $1,500 range. You do get what you pay for.  The local bike shop can help steer you to a good cross country bike in your price range.  KSL is also a good place to look but know what you are buying. Our coaches are a great resource if you have questions! If you don't already have a bike, or if you are uncertain as to whether the bike you plan to ride is suitable, spend time talking with multiple people, collecting opinions and recommendations before you make a spontaneous decision. Fortunately, the bike can be used for multiple seasons and/or passed along to other family members. All riders must complete a bike and equipment check with one of the coaches prior to participating on the team.

Helmet
A properly fitted helmet with little to no side-to-side or front-to-back movement and free from cracks or dents. Straps should be adjusted so that when fastened, only two fingers can fit between the strap and chin. Full-face helmets are not allowed.
Tool Bag
Riders will only be allowed to ride if they have a tool bag on their bike or in a backpack containing at least the following items:
  • Spare tube
  • Tire levers
  • Multi-tool
  • Quick link (for chain)
  • Chain lube (not required to be on bike while riding)
  • Mini hand pump (not all are created equal) or CO2 cartridge and valve
  • Patch kit
Clothing & Shoes
Riders are required to wear matching team gear during races. Riders are encouraged to wear clothing appropriate for the conditions and shoes that will adequately protect the rider.
Food & Water
Appropriate for the conditions and distance we will be practicing. Food and water is provided on race day, but not for practices.
Skills
Riders must be able to repair their own flat tires and minor mechanical problems during a race. If a rider receives outside assistance or tools during a race they’ll be assessed a 5-minute penalty to their finish time for each occurrence.

parent support

This team simply cannot function without great parental support, volunteers and certified ride leaders and coaches. It's a team!

There are plenty of ways to volunteer from being a
certified level 2 NICA Ride Leader, a level 1 adult ride sweep, or not riding a bike at all ever on one of several team committees.

At Practices (Ride Leaders Needed)!
We are looking for Ride Leaders who can ride with our fastest kids, our slowest kids, and every one in between. Even if you are new to mountain biking but want to help, we will get you trained and ready to lead!
become a Ride Leader
At Team Events, Races & Parties
Several team committees help keep everything running for the team. Food for race day and team parties, planning of those parties, race day logistics at our team tent/pitzone, etc.

Sign-up sheets will circulate before each race for team AND league volunteer duties.
